Indonesian Gending Gamelan

Gendhing structure refers to colotomic structure of gamelan compositions in general. Gendhing (also written, as in the old orthography, gending) can also be used to refer to a specific class of colotomic structures used in Javanese gamelan music. Gamelan is traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments are metallophones played by mallets as well as a set of hand played drums called kendhang which register the beat. Gamelan is still commonly played in formal occasions and in many traditional Indonesian ceremonies, gamelan is an integral part of Indonesian culture. Gamelan’s role in rituals is so important that there is a Javanese saying, “It is not official until the gong is hung”. [source: wikipedia.org]
